Why do so many weird things happen to me? Can't I ever have just a garden variety common cold, broken bone or something? (not that I want a broken bone, that was just a bad example) So yesterday I went to my dentist for a filling on one of my upper teeth, toward the back on my right side. Just a silver filling, nothing fancy, not even a cavity, just a wee spot that could eventually become trouble.
My appointment was at the end of the day, and when I got home I noticed that my face had become really swollen on the right side and was hot to the touch. How strange? I immediately called Ann to see what she suggested. She told me to call my dentist right away. So I did, and he wasn't overly concerned, suggesting two possible causes: 1) the quantity of anesthesia used (not very likely) or 2) that the needle had hit a vein or an artery (more likely). I do remember that while he was injecting me there was a moment of pain, despite the numbing agent that was swabbed onto my gums.
I iced the area on and off while watching TV, then took a couple of ibuprofen. Because of the new filling, I didn't want to eat anything too hard or crunchy, so Tom and I drove thru Taco Bell and I got an order of Pintos & Cheese. Nice and soft, right? The choice might not have been the best because half of my lips were still numb and I couldn't close my lips over the spoon, which was rather messy. So I put the spoon into my mouth, turned it upside down and scraped the beans onto my tongue. I treated myself to a bowl of Self Pity ice cream, which strangely was not as troublesome to eat. Go figure.
My face was still swollen this morning. And quite painful to touch. I had a heck of a time washing my face and moisturizing and didn't even consider trying to put on makeup. I couldn't open my mouth very wide either so breakfast was difficult and time consuming. It has gotten better throughout the day. The swelling has gone down some, though still very painful.
This too shall pass…
